Design Challenge: 3 experiences, 1 feature

Facebook wanted to reinvent the old days of the "couch" watching experience, in addition to helping influencers build better communities with their followers. To do this, I was tasked to create three unique user experiences: The Facebook Videos Playlist, Facebook Live Events, and Facebook social login for partnered streaming services (HBO Max). I was given three months to concept, design, and execute these features, which we know today as a "Watch Party.”

Feature 1: Facebook Video Playlist

Facebook wanted to add more sharing abilities to users outside of sending videos through messengers. In addition to sharing videos, they wanted the video-watching experience to be more social. This feature would allow users to make a playlist of videos, invite friends, and set up a time to watch and react to videos together. They resulted in a more shared social experience.

AddPlaylist-1

1. The person watches a video and sees an option to create a playlist around the video they just saw.

AddPlaylist-2-2

2. The host is brought into the playlist creation. The host populates the playlist with a cover and playlist description.

AddPlaylist-4

3. The host invites friends and family to join the playlist, which can then contribute to the playlist.

AddPlaylist-8-2

4. The host starts the watch party and wants to comment on the video. The host can activate their camera as well as select a co-host.

AddPlaylist-9-2

5. The host and co-host are now commenting on the video.

6. The watch party has ended; now, the host can schedule a recurring watch party.

Feature 2: Facebook Live Events

Facebook hosts many live events, but it has always been a solo-watching experience with no engagement with the community or with friends & family. This feature would allow custom experiences dependent on the event for users to join in with others or a private group with people they have invited.

Fb-events-2

1. Interacts with CUE and shows loyalty while launching the player.

2. Participants can engage in conversations during the live event.

3. Participants receive a CUE that a new topic has been posted.

4. Participant swipes over to view all topics and considers one.

5. Participants can scan through topics being discussed live about the event.

6. Participants can drill down on a topic if they're interested.

7. In this example, a noise maker is displayed when Argentina scores and the chat briefly floods with stickers.

8. Game or event ends, and an overlay appears with moments to post on participants' feeds and new content to watch.

Feature 3: Streaming Social Experience

Facebook wanted to add social logins with leading streaming services to make a "coach" watching experience. Users would connect their stream services to their Facebook accounts. Once they begin watching a show and open the Facebook app, it prompts them to "Start a watch party." Once started, users can see comments from their group on their screen and respond and engage on the app. Facebook will also offer the host a way to engage with the group but posting trivia questions, polls, and other activities.

FB-Screen-1

1. Users would get a prompt on their TV to open up the Facebook application.

FB-Screen-2

2. Once the users open the app, they will have the option to start the conversation.

FB-Screen-3

3. They will see the conversation on their screen and mobile device once they agree and connect. They will also have the option to mute or highlight certain members.

FB-Screen-4

4. Users can see polls, trivia, and other activities on their screens and have a chance to respond on their devices. The host will know the results and award points to whoever was correct. Also, the chat log will be seen across all users with the ability to mute or highlight certain party members.
