Project
Watch Party is a new social content consumption experience.

Background
Facebook wanted to create a social video experience, which would allow friends & family and Influencers to experience videos and events together as a community.

Responsibilities
Product Design
UI/UX Design

Overview

Facebook set out to modernize the shared TV viewing experience for mobile while creating new ways for creators to engage their communities.

Over a three-month sprint, I designed three new experiences: Video Playlists, Live Events, and social login for streaming partners such as HBO Max—contributing to Facebook’s broader social viewing strategy.

 🎯

Problem

Facebook needed new ways to help people discover and engage with video in a fast, mobile-first world. Attention was shifting toward shorter, more dynamic content, creating pressure to make viewing easier, more social, and worth returning to.

🚀

Solution

Led design for new video experiences focused on faster discovery, stronger engagement, and seamless mobile interaction. The work helped modernize how users consumed content while supporting long-term platform growth.

Feature 1: Video Playlist

Video discovery on the platform was fragmented, making it harder for people to organize, return to, and share content around specific interests. This feature introduced a more intentional way to build and follow playlists, helping users create personalized viewing paths around topics they cared about.

AddPlaylist-1

1The person watches a video and sees an option to create a playlist around the video they just saw.

AddPlaylist-2-2

2. The host is brought into the playlist creation. The host populates the playlist with a cover and playlist description.

AddPlaylist-4

3. The host invites friends and family to join the playlist, which can then be contributed to the playlist.

AddPlaylist-8-2

4. The host starts the watch party and wants to comment on the video. The host can activate their camera as well as select a co-host.

AddPlaylist-9-2

5. The host and co-host are now commenting on the video.

AddPlaylist-10

6. The watch party has ended; now, the host can schedule a recurring watch party.

Feature 2: Live Events

Live sports and real-time events created a natural opportunity for communal viewing, but the experience lacked structure for deeper participation. This concept explored how live broadcasts could feel more social by combining reactions, conversation, and shared momentum around the event.

Fb-events-2

1Interacts with CUE and shows loyalty while launching the player.

Fb-events-3

2. Participants can engage in conversations during the live event.

Fb-events-4

3. Participants receive a CUE that a new topic has been posted.

Fb-events-5

4. Participant swipes over to view all topics and considers one.

Fb-events-6

5. Participants can scan through topics being discussed live about the event.

Fb-events-7

6. Participants can drill down on a topic if they're interested.

7. In this example, a noise maker is displayed when Argentina scores and the chat briefly floods with stickers.

Fb-events-9

8. Game or event ends, and an overlay appears with moments to post on participants' feeds and new content to watch.

Feature 3: Streaming Social Experience

As streaming became more central to entertainment, there was an opportunity to extend social viewing beyond the platform itself. This concept explored how partner services could plug into the Facebook ecosystem, making it easier for people to discover content, watch together, and stay connected across devices.

FB-Screen-1

1. Users would get a prompt on their TV to open up the Facebook application.

FB-Screen-2

2. Once the users open the app, they will have the option to start the conversation.

FB-Screen-3

3. They will see the conversation on their screen and mobile device once they agree and connect. They will also have the option to mute or highlight certain members.

FB-Screen-4

4. Users can see polls, trivia, and other activities on their screens and have a chance to respond on their devices. The host will know the results and award points to whoever was correct. Also, the chat log will be seen across all users with the ability to mute or highlight certain party members.
